Our mission is to offer adults with autism or other intellectual developmental disabilities the opportunity to live as independently as possible by providing safe and secure neuro-inclusive cohousing communities with built-in amenities, meaningful employment opportunities, and natural support systems, and to give their parents and aging caregivers peace of mind that they will never have to worry about their children being alone or isolated.
Current estimates suggest that over 5.4 million adults with autism live in the United States, and approximately 87% of them live in their parents’ homes. According to the US Government Accountability Office (GAO), 500,000 youth with autism will enter adulthood by 2025.They concluded that current service systems in the United States are not adequate to address the needs of this emerging population. NDL is on an ambitious journey to build lifelong, safe, and sustainable smart-home enabled housing for this at-risk group of individuals.
The step toward independence from a parent’s home is critical in any person’s psychological and social development. We hope to provide opportunities for adults with autism to connect with a wider community and integrate more fully into society. NDL’s housing options are designed with the flexibility to adapt to specific economic and neurological needs, and we envision that our neuro-diverse communities will flourish on the foundation of practical and sustainable housing options, healthcare services, adaptive employment, supportive systems, and social integration opportunities.
